First generation closed trams
São Luís trams
series 400-474
These 75 4-wheel trams were constructed by the
St.Louis Car. Co. They entered service in 1901. The tramcars
473 and 474 got new, Brill type, bodies after being damaged
by a fire in 1917 in the Santo Amaro depot. In 1935 the 415,
455, 467 & 468 were withdrawn from service. Their trucks
and electric equipments were used for new "Standard" cars
with retaining of their numbers. Between 1951 and 1963 a
total of 23 other cars went out of service. Their trucks and
electric equipments were used for "Caixote" cars, also with
retaining of the numbers. The cars 435 & 437 were
reconstructed in 1965 to become the Tourist service cars 2
& 1. All other cars were withdrawn from service until
1973. Tramcar 444 is part of the museum collection.
Brill-bogie trams series
323-342
These 20 bogie trams were
constructed by Brill
and came into service in 1906. Five cars (327, 328,
329, 338
& 340) did get new bodies in "Standard" style in
1931/32. Nine other cars (324-326, 331, 334-337
& 341)
were reconstructed in 1959-61. The other six cars
(323, 330,
332, 333, 339 & 342) were hardly changed until
withdrawel of the series. |
Stephenson trams series 343-362
The bodies of these 20 bogie trams
had the same design as the series 323-342, but were
constructed by John Stephenson & Co, a subsidiary of
Brill. Moreover they did have four motors instead of two.
These cars did enter service in 1907. Four cars (345, 353,
355 & 356) did get new bodies in "Standard" style in
1931/32. All other cars except for 346 & 348, were
reconstructed in 1959-61.
Carros do Povo series 363-367
These 5 bogie trams came into service in 1907. Their
platforms were larger compared those of the series 323-342
& 343-362 with a total overall length equal to the cars
of both other batches. Together with a different seating
arrangement this resulted in less seating capacity but more
space for standing pasengers. These cars were used on
special workmen services. They went out of service in the
fourties. Maybe their trucks and electric equipments were
used for the new bogie cars 806-810.
Brill trams series 475-499 &
503-507
These 30 4-wheel tramcars were of the Brill semi-convertible
type. They had six windows at each side. Moreover two
São Luís cars (473-474) were reconstructed
with this type body after a fire in Santo Amaro depot in
1917.
Brill-Radiax trams series 500-502
These three cars were of the same semi-convertible type as
of the series 475-499 & 503-507, however with 8 windows
at each side instead of 6. The trucks were of the Radiax
type developed by Brill. This type of truck was intended to
make a larger axle distance, and with that a longer car
body, possible. |
